Bloom tutorial: How to make a natural Christmas wreath
Aoife Scully from Harvest Blooms and the Institute of Flowers offers this simple, step-by-step guide to creating a beautiful Christmas wreath.

There’s something so special about creating your own wreath; the scent of fresh foliage, the textures, and the simple rhythm of crafting it by hand. Here’s my step-by-step guide to making a beautiful, natural wreath using traditional methods and seasonal greenery.
You’ll need:
- Straw base
- Real wire
- Scissors
- Foliage selection, such as Nobilis, Cupress, Sussex Silver, Eucalyptus, and Bottle Brush
Method
1. Prepare your base
Start with your straw base and real wire. Attach the wire securely to the base by wrapping it around a few times to anchor it in place.

2. Create your foliage bunches
Make small, neat bundles of mixed foliage, combining textures like Nobilis, Cupress, Sussex Silver, Eucalyptus, and Bottle Brush for a beautiful balance of colour and shape.

3. Begin wiring your wreath
Place your first bunch of foliage onto the straw base. Wrap the wire firmly around the stems and base to secure it. Don’t cut the wire; you will use it continuously as you go around the wreath.

4. Continue layering
Overlap each new bunch slightly on top of the previous one, always working in the same direction around the circle. This creates a lovely, full and even look. Keep your wire nice and tight to hold everything securely.

5. Finish your circle
When you reach the end, gently lift back your very first bunch and tuck your final bunch underneath it. Secure it with wire so the join is seamless.

6. Neaten your back
Once you’re happy with the shape, bind off your wire by twisting it into the back of the straw base or tucking it securely out of sight.

7. Time to decorate!
Your wreath is now ready for its finishing touches. Add seasonal decorations such as dried oranges, pinecones, berries, or ribbon. Simply wire these in securely to your liking.

And there you have it, a natural, handmade wreath ready to hang and enjoy! It is the perfect blend of traditional craft and festive charm. I hope you enjoy making it. Happy Christmas!
