About the Designer

Born and bred on a Wexford farm at the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains, Niall Deacon is a Bord Bia Quality Assured sheep and tillage farmer, a forester, a graveyard caretaker, and a sculptor.

He learned his artistic skills under the watchful eye of sculptor Dick Joynt and has continued to practice his art since 1998. Niall’s favourite medium is using granite boulders in abstract art. This is his first show garden for Bord Bia Bloom.

Garden Overview

Designed by sculptor Niall Deacon, this garden is inspired by Archimedes’ eureka moment and brings visitors on a sensory journey from the sauna cabin at the entrance, through lush, green planting, to a plunge pool which Niall has carved from a boulder on his farm in Wexford.

The garden offers a sanctuary where you can switch off, relax and reflect on life. A large mirror in a carved granite frame provides a focal point and reflects the layered, naturalistic, woodland planting. Tall, arching trees form a canopy and provide shade for the wide palette of woodland perennials. Subtle flowers are dotted around the garden in a natural and informal manner, including Magnolia x wieseneri, Corydalis elata and Darmera peltata.

The plunge pool in the far corner of this small show garden provides a haven to immerse yourself in the garden, test the Archimedes principle, or simply reflect on your own eureka moment.
