Flower power
What’s involved in running one of Ireland’s largest flower farms? Darragh McCullough of Elmgrove Flower Farm tells us about his business in Gormanston, County Meath and shares some advice for gardening this summer.

Tell us about your business.
Elmgrove Flower Farm is one of Ireland’s leading flower farms, harvesting over 12 million stems annually. We have diversified from crops and livestock into retail through the farm’s shop, garden centre, and website. Daffodils and peonies are two of the farm’s main crops.
What does the day-to-day running of the farm involve?
We harvest from the fields or the tunnels throughout the year, and in between we tackle seasonal jobs like planting, harvesting, packing, or running events, which is becoming a bigger part of the business.
What’s your favourite plant?
The peony is a favourite because of the beautiful, big, blousy blooms that it throws year after year with scents to die for!
What jobs should gardeners tackle this month?
Plants are in overdrive right now so battling weeds can feel a bit overwhelming, but this is the hard part – stick with it!
How can gardeners support the environment and encourage biodiversity?
Choosing native species, peat-free composts, and natural fertilisers are the first steps you can take to garden more sustainably. And buy locally grown wherever you can.
Do you have any tips for people who are getting started at gardening?
Start small, start today, and don’t be afraid to mess it up. You can buy a lot of seeds, plants and compost with €50.
Have you any exciting events coming up?
Yes! As Ireland’s unofficial daffodil capital, Elmgrove Flower Farm is throwing open its fields to the public for Daff Fest 2026. From March 28th to April 6th next year, people will be able to experience the magic of walking through millions of blooms, fill their arms with flowers, and all the proceeds go to charity.
What does attending Bloom mean to you and your team?
Being part of Bloom gives us brand recognition with our key customer base – people who love gardening! It’s a highlight of the year, and we’re already planning for 2026!
Elmgrove Flower Farm won a silver-gilt medal for its floral display at Bord Bia Bloom 2025. To learn more about the business visit elmgroveflowerfarm.ie and follow the team @elmgroveirishflowerfarm
