Mark Hoey has been landscaping since he left school and started working with Andrew Christopher Garden Design. After almost 14 years working for landscaping companies in Ireland and Canada, he entered RTÉ’s Super Garden competition which he won in 2020. Mark has had a two year wait to bring his winning garden to Bord Bia Bloom but he is excited to showcase his talents at this year’s event.

Garden

While this winning garden from the 2020 series of Super Garden was originally designed to be accessible for a wheelchair user, it is intended as a beautiful space that everyone can enjoy. The theme of the garden reflects designer Mark Hoey’s own experiences with his mental health and the importance of having a calming space at home to retreat to and enjoy with family and friends.

The garden is designed at an angle, allowing for long, diagonal lines to create the impression of a larger space. Seating areas take you on a journey throughout the garden, while hedges with willow-framed cut outs divide the space, offering viewings from different vantage points. A green-roofed garden room offers a place to retreat at the back of the garden while a calming water feature reflects the sky and planting.
