The Forest Balcony

About the Garden

This garden is a concept for a balcony which forms a small part of an engineered forest on a new building. It showcases how to create valuable green infrastructure on a densely populated urban site.

It is a fictional setting, imagined as part of a building that has been designed to accommodate as much planting as possible, linking with other balconies, roof gardens, and ground-level planting.

Situated in a relatively sheltered and partially shaded position, the garden recreates the atmosphere of a lush forest on the small footprint available and provides a calming space for the residents. Planted in layers, small trees and climbers sit above an understory of ferns and low, interwoven perennials. To cool the air and irrigate the plants, rain water is collected and trickles and drips into a hidden reservoir. The walls of the building have been partially clad in green walls to clean the air.
