About the Designer

Kathryn Feeley is a garden designer, plantsperson and gardener. Drawing on her love of wild places, her work is characterised by naturalistic planting and creates spaces for people to connect with nature.

After a rewarding career in healthcare, Kathryn went on to study garden design. While studying, she won the Garden & Landscape Designers Association Student & Graduate Design Award for her design and planting of an urban pocket park on Blind Quay in Dublin. Since then, she has gone on to develop a successful career designing gardens in Dublin and further afield.

Garden Overview

Designed by Kathryn Feeley, the Green Balcony demonstrates how even a tiny outdoor space – such as an apartment balcony – can be full of life and greenery. It creates a place to be in nature, to be immersed in planting, to sit beneath the canopy of a tree, and to connect with wildlife and the seasons.

Plants have been chosen to suit a typical balcony. These are wind tolerant and will thrive in exposed areas. Trees reach up to fill the vertical space while beneath them a textural mix of grasses and perennials bring movement and colour. The plants are central to this garden but there is also generous seating where people can gather to unwind, relax and enjoy the green surroundings.
