About the Garden - Small Show Garden

This small show garden represents a traditional cottage garden with a unique twist. It is bursting with a random mix of colourful annuals and perennials that delight the senses.

The soft colour palette and textures relax the mind; enticing users to follow the path past bountiful fruit and vegetable patches. The trees have been carefully selected to provide contrast and shade on hot summer days.

This quiet idyll is a place of mindfulness and joy… or it was until a unidentified flying object (UFO) crashed into it. Although physically unharmed, the garden’s owner remembers nothing of the encounter as the shock has paralysed his senses. While no alien life forms have been spotted yet, keep your eyes open during your visit. After all, who wouldn’t want to come to Bord Bia Bloom?

Designer Information

Joe Kelly hails from Dungarvan where he is a pharmacist by day and dreamer by night. While he harboured ambitions to pursue a career in horticulture as a young man, Joe instead veered towards the family tradition of pharmacy. He has no regrets and combining his day job with his gardening pastime has helped him to achieve a happy work/life balance.

Joe credits the late Barney Johnson, whose programme The Garden featured on RTÉ, for developing his early interest in plants and he cites his green-fingered mum as another key influence. This is Joe’s first Bord Bia Bloom show garden.
